LEGACY HOUSE
A Critical Need in Our Region
Far North Queensland is home to over 11,000 veterans, the highest per capita veteran population in Australia — not including their families
For over 90 years, FNQ Legacy has supported these families through times of loss, injury, and transition. In the past 12 months alone, more than 650 veterans and their families have accessed support services
But the need is growing.
As cost of living pressures rise and global tensions continue to escalate, veterans and Defence families are facing increasing strain. Service demands, uncertainty, and the lasting impacts of service-related trauma are placing pressure not just on veterans — but on the families who support them every day
Right now, there is no dedicated, local hub in Far North Queensland to support these families.
What is Legacy House and Why It Matters
Legacy House is a purpose-built facility designed to provide practical support, connection, and stability for veterans’ families in Far North Queensland.
It will be a place where families can connect with others who understand their experience, access support services and referrals, participate in wellbeing and social programs, and receive ongoing care through a trusted local network.
Legacy House is not just a building.
It is a dedicated community hub designed to support families through every stage of their journey.
Behind every veteran is a family.
Families who carry the load during service, support recovery after injury, and navigate grief, trauma, and transition. Often, they do this quietly, without recognition or support.
Legacy House exists to ensure they are not left behind.
By delivering a central hub for veteran-related programs and services, Legacy House will improve mental health and wellbeing outcomes, provide early intervention and preventative support, and reduce pressure on health and social services.
It will strengthen community safety and resilience, support local economic growth through job creation, and most importantly, ensure families can access support locally, without needing to travel or navigate complex systems alone.
Project Status
- Land secured in Smithfield, Cairns (Council-owned site)
- Concept designs and site planning completed
- Cost estimates finalised
- Project ready to proceed upon funding approval
In 2025, FNQ Legacy secured a $1 million commitment from the Queensland Government, a significant milestone.
The project is now awaiting Federal Government funding to proceed.
Funding Requirement
To deliver Legacy House, FNQ Legacy is seeking:
👉 $5.7 million in funding for capital works
While FNQ Legacy can contribute to the project, fully funding the build would significantly impact the organisation’s ability to continue delivering essential services across the region.
This funding ensures:
- The facility can be delivered in full
- Ongoing services remain sustainable
- Long-term support for families is not compromised

Kelly’s girls, Sarah and Kate, were only eight and six when their Dad was killed whilst deployed in Afghanistan by one of the Afghan soldiers he was helping to train.
WHY SUPPORT LEGACY HOUSE
By supporting the Legacy House Project, individuals and organisations can help to create a world that is more supportive, more connected, and more sustainable. This will not only make a difference in the lives of veteran families we support but also the wider community, where stronger, more resilient communities can thrive.
Improved access to services
Legacy House will provide a physical space for service providers to collaborate and integrate services, making it easier for members to access the support they need. This will help to reduce the barriers to services and improve outcomes for those who use them.
Strengthened Communities
Legacy House will serve as a community hub where members can come together to participate in a range of activities, build relationships, and promote social cohesion. This will help to create stronger, more connected communities that are better equipped to support each other and address common challenges.
Increased Sustainability
The building will be designed with sustainability in mind, incorporating environmentally friendly features such as energy-efficient lighting, cooling systems, and rainwater harvesting. This will help to reduce the buildings carbon footprint and promote sustainable practices in the community.
Art and Culture
Legacy House will incorporate art and cultural elements into its design, creating an aesthetically pleasing environment that supports creativity and encourages cultural exchange. This will contribute to the cultural richness of the community and provide opportunities for those visiting to engage with the arts and culture.
