These camps give children the opportunity to build resilience, find peer support, and gain new experiences, providing them with the skills and friendships they need for the future. Kosha, on her kids attending Legacy camps: "Death can be intensely isolating for children. To share stories, memories, and love with other kids who just ‘get it’ is a wholesome part of healing. (Attending a Legacy camp) It was hard, it was confronting, but it was completely enriching and humbling… More valuable than money and more appreciated than I can express."

We lost him after he made it home - Mel's Story

Making it home, you're considered one of the lucky ones. But the war doesn't end when you get home. Steve battled with pain, physical injury and PTSD as a result of his military service.

He spoke up about the physical pain... but when it came to the trauma in his mind, he went quiet.

He tried his best to show up for his wife, two little girls and baby boy, even when everything was falling apart inside.

Until one night, the struggle became too much.
Mel found herself widowed at 34, left to raise two daughters and her son, far too young to understand why their dad was gone.

There was no pause for grief. Just paperwork, bills, and three little hearts breaking right alongside hers.

“I felt like I was drowning,” Mel says. "I didn't know how to explain to my children that their dad didn't die in war but because of his service."

The world kept going, even after hers had shattered.

Then FNQ Legacy stepped in. Legacy helped to cover the kids’ education and sporting expenses, but more than that, Legacy gave Mel someone she could count on. Her Legatee became like family, a reminder that they aren’t on this journey alone.

Eight years on, whilst there are still some hard days and hurdles for the family to juggle, the good times are starting to outweigh the bad. Mel’s eldest is preparing to graduate high school. She dreams of becoming a marine biologist—and one day, a Legatee herself, so she can help other families like hers.

Meanwhile, the two younger ones are chasing big dreams of playing netball and basketball professionally.
This is what your support makes possible.
