in 2026, with thanks to Family Support Funding Program funding, FNQ Legacy is expanding our Legacy Links program, creating more opportunities for Defence and veteran families across Cairns and Far North Queensland to connect, build friendships and feel supported in their local community.

Legacy Links was originally developed to support recently transitioned veteran families, helping families reconnect with community and navigate local services and support.

Building on this established program, the FNQ Legacy Family Connect Support Program now extends support to current serving ADF families, families preparing for or navigating transition from Defence, and veteran families across the region.

Defence family life can bring unique challenges, including relocation, periods of separation, changing support networks and the adjustment to life after service. Legacy Links is designed to help families stay connected through these different stages.

What can families expect?

Legacy Links provides welcoming opportunities for families to connect through:

• Family-friendly activities and social events
• Opportunities to meet other Defence and veteran families
• Peer connection and local support
• Information about services, activities and community resources across Cairns and FNQ
• Ongoing online connection between events

The program combines regular face-to-face activities with an online community, helping families build relationships and stay connected between events.

The expanded Legacy Links program is made possible through funding from the Australian Government Department of Defence through the Family Support Funding Program (FSFP).

The program supports FNQ Legacy’s goal of strengthening connection, resilience and wellbeing for Defence and veteran families and helping families feel connected, supported and part of their local community.
